In November 2011, the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the unemployment rate declined by 0.4 percentage point from 9.0 percent to 8.6 percent, after the unemployment rate had ranged between 9.0 to 9.2 percent from April 2011 through October 2011. The number of unemployed persons also decreased by 594,000 to 13.3 million in November 2011. The increase of 120,000 jobs in total nonfarm payroll employment in November was in line with the average gain for the prior 12 months of 131,000 jobs.
Overall, the private sector added 140,000 jobs in November, as employment rose in a number of service-providing industries including:
