Alex Molina thought that his co-worker at the Yuma Proving Grounds had pulled over to the side of the road for a quick nap on his way home from work, when he saw him slumped behind the wheel of his car, so he pulled over, intending to jokingly scare him. Instead, Molina ended up saving his friend’s life.

R. Glenn Hubbard, dean of the Columbia Business School, wants his students to make connections—and not just through networking.

He blames the recent financial crisis on a failure by leaders to successfully see the big picture, focusing instead on their area of expertise. Not connecting the dots, he says, was disastrous.

In Mr. Hubbard’s view, business schools must prepare students with a broader education in order to thwart an economic meltdown. To that end, Columbia is deliberately weaving topics such as decision-making and ethics into classes across all disciplines.

The paid sick leave ball is back in City Council’s court now where it may collapse with a sick thud following Mayor Nutter’s veto Tuesday. The measure narrowly passed with nine votes on June 16, and it would take 12 votes to overcome his veto. Advocates promise they’ll work to make that happen.

Opponents, who apparently were persuasive,  say the bill would pile yet another cost on businesses which are still struggling.
