Federal figures show that more than 23% of personal income in Alabama comes from federal money, which could run out soon.
A story in Monday’s New York Times compared the percentages of states where federal assistance accounts for a substantial portion of personal income. It showed that in 2007, federal payments comprised 19% of personal income in Alabama. By 2010, the number rose to 23.4%.
The federal assistance includes unemployment benefits, food stamps, Social Security payments and disability.
As the story points out, “By the end of this year, however, many of those dollars are going to disappear, with the expiration of extended benefits intended to help people cope with the lingering effects of the recession.”
The Alabama Department of Industrial Relations reports that in May, 2011, the jobless rate in the state rose to 9.6% from 9.3% in April. That means there were 206,809 unemployed persons in Alabama.
