The theme of the PIHRA conference is and participants will be offered education sessions providing practical and applicable information to help them be successful as California and the U.S. recover from recession. ESRs Founder and CEO, Attorney and safe hiring expert Lester Rosen, will present two educational sessions. ESR will also have an exhibit booth (#709) at the Exposition Hall at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Rosen’s two educational sessions – ‘Web 2.0 Caution! Using Social Networking Sites and Search Engines to Screen Applicants’ and ‘International Background Checks: Global Due Diligence and Legal Compliance’ – will take place on Wednesday, August 31, 2011.

  • 1st Session: ‘1002 Web 2.0 Caution! Using Social Networking Sites and Search Engines to Screen Applicants’ (Wednesday, August 31, 2011, 9:45 AM 11:00 AM). Rosen says that while employers have discovered a treasure trove of information by using social networking sites and search engines, the unrestricted use of Web 2.0 could land a human resources professional in legal hot water. This session will examine the pros and cons of employers utilizing such tools, including discrimination issues, legal off-duty conduct, privacy, accuracy, and authenticity. This session has been approved for 1.25 General recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.
  • 2nd Session: ‘1055 International Background Checks: Global Due Diligence and Legal Compliance’ (Wednesday, August 31, 2011, 11:15 AM 12:30 PM). With the mobility of workers across international borders, Rosen says a background check just in the United States is no longer adequate. Employers also cannot assume that a VISA means a worker has been cleared. This session will introduce employers to international background checks, including the legal, privacy, practical, and cultural challenges employers face when obtaining information outside of the U.S.  This session has been approved for 1.25 Global recertification credit hours toward GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.

Rosen is the author of ‘The Safe Hiring Manual,’ a comprehensive guide to employment screening, and is a frequent presenter nationwide on employment screening issues for the ‘ESR Speaks’ training program at . Rosen was the chairperson of the steering committee that founded the NAPBS, a trade organization for the background screening industry, and served as the first co-chairman.   will also exhibit at the 2011 PIHRA Conference and Exposition.
