You need a mentor or coach to guide you through your career journey. These career professionals that have walked the path before you will know how to guide you as you advance up the organization. It is easier to find them than you think. Locate two executives that you have come in contact with at work or through networking events. Ask them if they would consider being a career coach for you. You’d like them to be available for you for 4 coaching sessions in a year long period that would last about 20 minutes each.
In these sessions you can ask them about ideas for your career path and journey. If they work for the same company as you, you could ask them to assign you a project that you could do. Ask them what it would take to achieve leadership at the organization.
Reach out and locate a mentor. One of the two that you ask will most likely say yes to your request. Let them coach you and help you develop into a better employee. All of us can use open and honest feedback to help us shape our future.
